NDIS participants: Do you need a scribe or typist to do your typing for you?

Do you need a typist or scribe to do your typing for you, due to your disability?

If you are an NDIS participant, and the reason you need someone to do your typing for you is due to your disability or neurodivergence, you may be able to use your NDIS funds to pay for a scribe or typist to do your typing for you.

NDIS participants who can write by hand but cannot type

If you can write by hand, but cannot use a computer due to your disability or neurodivergence, we can type your handwritten notes or documents up for you. We can do this via Zoom, telephone or your choice of online method, or (depending on your location) face to face.

You can use your NDIS funds to pay for this as long as:

  • you need to get essays or reports typed (into a computer) to participate in and complete your studies, in order to meet your goals, or
  • you need to get your writing typed (into a computer) in order to live your daily life which will help you meet your goals; for example, you may need application forms filled out on the computer, or emails typed up and sent for you, or
  • getting your written information typed is necessary for you to meet your goals.

That is, if (a) your disability is the reason you need your documents typed, (b) this typing support is necessary to meet your stated NDIS goals, and (c) you have available funds in your NDIS account, you can use your NDIS funds to pay for these typing services.

NDIS participants who can speak, but cannot write by hand or type

If you cannot use a computer, or write by hand, due to your disability or neurodivergence, we can type your spoken words into a computer document. (We call this “scribing” or ‘scribing-as-you-speak”.) We can do this via Zoom, telephone or your choice of online method, or (depending on your location) face to face.

You can use your NDIS funds to pay for this as long as:

  • you need to get essays or reports typed (into a computer) to participate in and complete your studies, in order to meet your goals, or
  • you need to get your stated information typed (into a computer) in order to live your daily life which will help you meet your goals; for example, you may need application forms filled out on the computer, or emails typed up and sent for you, or
  • getting your verbal information typed is necessary for you to take the first step towards meeting your goals; for example, your handwritten document needs to be typed up on the computer, in order to begin to work on documenting your testimony or story (which would enable some NDIS participants to meet their goals).

That is, if (a) your disability is the reason you need your documents typed, (b) this typing support is necessary for you to meet your stated NDIS goals, and (c) you have available funds in your NDIS account, you can use your NDIS funds to pay for these typing services.
