Homes for Puppies (2026) is Chloe McDonald’s second published book.

About the author

Chloe is a Tasmanian author who lives in Hobart. She has been writing and drawing pictures for as long as she can remember. She wrote and illustrated this book over nineteen months, then on the editing for another few months.

Chloe says in the introduction to this book:

Some of this story is from my imagination and some of it is based on my own personal experiences. Although my cousin’s dog had a litter of puppies when I was young, this story is about Natasha, the main character, and an imagined litter of puppies. I’ve got hydrocephalus, like Natasha. I’ve had some of the same childhood experiences as Natasha, like going to hospital and having an operation, and coping with school bullies – although Natasha is better at dealing with them than I was. But most of Natasha’s experiences are imagined.

Who is this book for?

Both children and adults will enjoy reading this book. Because the main character does face different challenges including the impacts that hydrocephalus has on her life, disabled people may especially like reading this book.

What is this book about?

Everything’s great in Natasha’s life. She’s got a lovely family and compassionate  friends. She lives with a medical condition but doesn’t let that bother her. Yes, there are mean girls at school – Brenda, Katherine and Joy – but never mind them. Best of all, her cousin Holly’s dog has had a litter of puppies and Natasha’s Auntie Rose needs to find homes for them.

Just when everything seems perfect Natasha becomes ill. She has to stay in the hospital for an operation and Nurse Amanda is mean to her. But are things really as bad as they seem? When she goes back to school will she have the confidence to stand up to the bullies once and for all? And will Auntie Rose find homes for the puppies?
